  1. Increase the number of fields available in .csv output

A few archives (e.g. PARADISEC) don't accept IMDI metadata, but provide a handy .xls(x) sheet for csv-type imports. I just used SayMore's .csv export function, and (a) was not given an option of which fields I wanted to include, and (b) got fewer fields outputted in the .csv than were available.

Would it be possible to improve .csv export to include a "include/exclude fields" function?

    Thanks much
    Mark

      Hi Mark,
      > got fewer fields outputted in the .csv than were available.

I hate to put the work on you, but since we don’t have anybody assigned to work on SayMore, the smaller the task, the sooner I can squeeze in a fix. Could you list the fields that you would want that are missing?

      > was not given an option of which fields I wanted to include

Would it work to open the resulting file in a spreadsheet program and delete the columns you don’t want?

      thanks

    • Big problem - CSV to ELAN SOLVED!

When exporting Saymore time-aligned annotations as a CSV file, the time format saved is 00:00:00:00.

This is the INCORRECT way to write time to milliseconds, and does not allow for later importing to ELAN.

Please change the SayMore time code to the format 00:00:00.00

Note the dot (.) rather than colon (:) separating seconds from milliseconds.

This is a simple error but has very frustrating ramifications. Can the programmers of SayMore please fix this!

      • Make a version that runs on Linux

I know there's already a request for an OSX port; and like the requestor there, I'd be happy if there was a native Linux version, or if there was a version that ran on Wine. This is such a tremendous tool for transcription and data management!

        • Make informed consent optional

I can appreciate the motivation behind taking such an "aggressive" approach to informed consent (as I heard it called in a training video once, with no hint of irony), however: the mechanisms through which "informed consent" are conceived as being communicated here are highly culturally-specific, and the implication that informed consent can be given - never mind that it must be given - via a signed sheet of paper (or self-standing file of any other type) is not only highly culturally-specific, it is in fact highly inappropriate in some cultural settings, with some types of research relationship. What if I'm…

It would be nice to be able to output an IMDI file/package only, without having to export an entire project, i.e. copying all files.

            • Allow text strings in the interface to be localized to other languages.

We have many colleagues who would greatly benefit from this program, but who don't speak English well enough to use the English interface. Would you consider adding some kind of facility for end-users to contribute translations of the program text strings into other languages?

              • make adding Informed Consent more intuitive/accessible

I read in the Help files that in order to add an Informed Consent document (or recording), I'm supposed to click Add Files, browse/choose the file, and then Rename that file as Informed Consent. That is too opaque, and too many steps, for someone who doesn't use SayMore all the time.
Can you put an Informed Consent button (or Add Informed Consent button) along the row of buttons (Open | Rename | Convert) within the People tab, and/or add it to the list of the right-click menu when right-clicking on a Person? Informed Consent is so important, that it should…

                • add ISO code field to the Session metadata

Sometimes there are two languages within one source recording (due to code-switching).
Also, we have used the Add Files button to add relevant audio files into the same session (e.g. Source is a wordlist and additional audio file is an equivalent wordlist in a related, non-LWC language.) I would like to indicate the Ethnologue code (if there is one) specific to both of those files, but don't know how. (Or should these really be in separate Sessions?)

                    • allow 24 bit, 48kHz recording via the SayMore interface

currently - as I understand it - SayMore allows only 16 bit wav recordings via its interface. This is functional for some purposes, but not all. To capture the full amplitude range of human hearing, more bits are required, and the common setting beyond 16 bit is 24 bit.

To cover the full range of frequencies the human ear can process, one should sample at a higher frequency than what SayMore currently allows - 44.1 kHz. While this is less important for understanding human speech, an important part of a field research data-set is music. Most instruments will have coloring…

                      • add the capacity to create an index or table of contents of a project that includes a listing of all files within a session.

one can currently export a listing of the sessions, along with the metadata about the sessions, but this does not include an itemization of the files listed in each session. Id like to submit to different stakeholders (govt. agencies, in-country university reps, other NGOs) a record of all data collected. This could be simply an accounting of what was gathered. But a further, more complete feature would allow the index to link to the file items themselves, allowing for a CD/DVD distribution package.

                        • capacity to zoom lower than 100% during manual segmentation

Especially with word lists, not enough material fit's on the screen at 100% magnification. With the capacity to set the view at 75% or 50%, elicited lists still have clean "breaks" - silent sections indicating where to place a segment boundary. Moreover, one could see better the pattern of several sections at a time. Lastly, the segmenter automatically snaps to the start of the preceding segment whenever a marker is adjusted/placed. Having the entire section on the screen would eliminate the frustration of having the segmenter go backwards when the one doing the segmenting wants to go forward! (Perhaps I'll…

It would be very useful to me if users could rename labels of the stages. I am not using the BOLD documentation methodology for my project, so I can't use the Stages feature. I'd like to rename the Stages labels, and then manually keep track of my progress as I add (written) transcription and translation files.

To reproduce and "feel" sound melody of some unknow langangue it could be useful to have some visual "speak-along" instructions. To do so someones need to markup (tap) syllables of spoken speech and larger silence (markup per line-breaks) between single words (later is important to know when to take breath again).

                              Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnIAOTl5NIQ

especially when entering the written translation, eg perhaps simply copying from an already existing document. Then the playback is distracting, and may run down the laptop battery faster.

                                  • allow users to search metadata fields and data

It would be great to be able to search within SayMore. Specifically, I'd like to be able to search across my description fields to find the sessions where I covered a particular topic, and I can easily imagine other use cases for searching other metadata fields. I would also like to be able to use SayMore to search my notes (text files attached to each session) and annotations. I know I can search annotations if I export them to other pieces of software, but it would be handy to be able to this within SayMore.

                                    • provide a way to bulk convert/export to MP3

provide bulk-export capability so that you can export your finished project (or parts of it) to a format useful to your target audience, say MP3 format. One file at a time export/convert capability is too time consuming. Also it would be nice if the export/convert function could let you choose your own target folder outside the project folders and without creating the meta-data files along with it (or maybe an option to export without meta-data files). I'm thinking "burn this to a CD or MP3 player to distribute to the people" functionality.

                                      • provide a way to export segments as individual sound files

I know SayMore's primary purpose is not an analysis tool, but with this one feature, it could be. I so, so wish I could right click on a segment in the segmentation (and Careful Speech and Oral Translation tools as well) and click "export" or "save as..." or something and immediately have a short WAV or MP3 file that I could open in Speech Analyzer or PRAAT.

                                        • provide a keyboard shortcut for Ignore.

I'm using SayMore to do a first-pass annotation on recordings of traditional elicitation -- I'm only giving transcriptions and translations of the target language material and using Ignore for all the English material (I may use separate tiers in ELAN for the English material later). I'd like to keep my hands on the keyboard and use Tab and Enter along with a shortcut that would let me Ignore a segment. Right now it's a hassle to keep moving back and forth to the mouse to right-click and then click Ignore. It would be good to have the keyboard shortcut available…
